Why these routes exist
Ordinary net metering ties a plant to one service connection. Apartments and multi-meter properties often cannot place enough panels on the roof of the building that has the load. KERC has allowed two arrangements to widen the options.
Group net metering (GNM)
GNM lets a plant's generation offset consumption across several service connections of the same consumer. A society with separate meters for common areas, a clubhouse and an EV charging area could use it.
Virtual net metering (VNM)
VNM lets generation from one plant be shared across the meters of different consumers connected to the same distribution company. It can help when there is no suitable roof at the premises.
How the tariff works
Under the KERC order of 25 August 2026, the tariff for surplus energy under VNM and GNM is 75% of the corresponding net-metering rate for other plants. Energy first offsets the participating consumers' consumption in the billing period, and only the remaining surplus is treated as exported.
Where to find the rules
BESCOM's solar portal has separate application routes for VNM and GNM and publishes a common procedure for them, dated 12 May 2026. Read it for eligibility, documents and timelines.
When it suits you
- You have several meters under one owner.
- Roof space on the main building is limited.
- Your committee wants one shared plant rather than many small ones.
